The e-rickshaw drivers were protesting against the government rules which allow vehicles from only manufactures who meet stringent requirements.
Kejriwal interacted with the drivers after they did not allow his car to move out of his house. The drivers demanded that e-rickshaws should be allowed to move freely in Delhi. Though the e-rickshaws have been regularised, they claimed that Delhi Police are still harassing them. They demanded immediate intervention in order to give them justice.
Meanwhile, senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Yogendra Yadav said: “If we’ve made promises, we must be in a position to fulfill them. Expectations are high, we will live up to them. We are under more scrutiny now. We will be lazy to think that the BJP will lose in other states. It is incorrect to assume the Prime Minister Modi has lost his popularity.”
The AAP during its election campaign, emphasised on the need to develop the last-mile connectivity by expanding grameen sewa services, shared auto rickshaw services and e-rickshaws through fixed routes.
The e-rickshaws had gone off the roads in July last year after the Delhi High Court banned plying of
the vehicles. The court ordered a temporary ban on these rickshaws after a toddler slipped from his mother’s arms and fell into a cauldron of hot oil in East Delhi after she was hit by an e-rickshaw from behind.
Meanwhile, the e-rickshaw operators have been left in the lurch ever since.
Thousands of e-rickshaw drivers complain that they have been used by various parties for rich political dividends.
