The husband has been identified as a DTC conductor and the wife is reportedly critical.
The incident was reported to police around 12.15 am when Vijay (45) returned home after completing his night shift. Right after stepping inside his Kalyanpuri house in east Delhi, Vijay allegedly asked his wife if she was observing a fast for Karva Chauth.
On hearing a ‘no’ from his wife Mahesh (39), Vijay allegedly got angry and entered into an argument with the former. The spat soon turned ugly.
Vijay started beating his wife in a fit of rage. Frustrated with the incident, Mahesh reportedly asked Vijay what she should do as punishment for not keeping the fast. Overtaken by anger, Vijay asked her to go and drink phenyl.
Mahesh rushed to the bathroom and drank the phenyl kept there. Soon froth started coming out of her mouth. She was immediately rushed to the nearby Lal Bahadur Shashtri Hospital by her children.
The hospital staff made a PCR call to the police. When a team of police officers reached the hospital, the couple’s four children, including three sons and a daughter, who took Mahesh to the hospital told police that she was beaten up by their father and was forced to consume the acidic substance. Vijay has gone missing since the incident came to light.
‘On the basis of the statement given by the four children a case under appropriate sections, including section 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life) of the Indian Penal Code, has been registered against Vijay,’ deputy commissioner of police Ajay Kumar said.
‘The victim is being given the best treatment, but her condition remained critical as she has consumed a large amount of phenyl. A manhunt is on to nab the accused,’ the official added.
