“Jadavpur University which was once known as centre for excellence is fast turning into centre for disturbances. The authorities should take stern action against it,” Tripathi, who is also the chancellor of the university, said.
He also sought a detailed report from the Vice-Chancellor of the Jadavpur University in connection with the clash that broke out between two groups of students over the screening of a film inside the university campus on Friday. The V-C has submitted his report on Saturday.
It was learnt that Tripathi on Saturday talked to JU V-C Suranjan Das over phone and wanted to know about the incident. The Governor also criticised Friday’s incident. The Vice-Chancellor has called a meeting next week where he would talk to the Alumni Association which had given permission to screen a political movie ‘Buddha in a Traffic Jam’ at the Triguna Sen
auditorium and later denied the permission. The V-C will ask the Alumni Association why they had given permission and later denied it to screen the movie.
The students from the university on Saturday took out a rally protesting against the entry of the outsiders who had allegedly molested the university students on Friday when the screening of the film was going on. The students from various departments including Engineering and Arts took part in the rally. The students from other colleges and universities also joined the rally. It was learnt that the Vice Chancellor will submit a report to the Governor on Sunday. A team of ABVP activists on Saturday submitted a memorandum to the Governor.
Think India, a wing of BJP students’ body ABVP came after being denied permission organised the screening of the film on the JU ground. Several students were injured when a clash broke out between ABVP supporters and Faculty of Arts Students (FAS) and Democratic Students Federation (DSF). The students claimed that some outsiders entered into the campus and allegedly molested some girl students while the screening of the film was going on. Following the incident, JU vice chancellor rushed to the campus at around 10 pm to control the situation. BJP workers led by Roopa Ganguly also reached the spot to free four ABVP members who were held captive by FAS and DSF. A complaint was also lodged in the police station. The ABVP members were later escorted out of campus by security personnel.
Late on Friday night police lodged an FIR against the outsiders who had allegedly molested the students and the university authorities also filed separate complaint in the police station.
Things turned ugly when the FAS and DSF students claimed two of their members had been molested by outsiders and alleged that some outsiders who were AVBP involved in the incident. A FAS member alleged that when they were protesting against the screening of ‘Buddha in A Traffic Jam’ by showing black flags and raising slogans, some of the Think India members started assaulting them.
Think India members denied the allegation and said that they had been assaulted while leaving the ground. Some of those who were injured in the clash between the two groups were taken to KPC medical college. ABVP leader Subir Halder who met the Governor on Saturday said that no incident of molestation had taken place at Jadavpur University on Friday. The Left wing students were making false allegations and they have informed the matter to the Governor who is also the Chancellor of the university. He also said that they would inform the matter to the Union Home Ministry.
