A 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly demanding Rs 5 lakh within 24 hours from the principal of a private school in North-west Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh, threatening that he would otherwise blow up the school, the police said on Monday.

When the police officials dialled up the number of the accused, he also challenged the cops to “catch him if they could.” The youth was identified as Madan Chaudhary (alias Vikas Mishra), who belongs to Darbhanga district in Bihar. He worked as a casual labour in a construction site and was presently jobless. He lives in a nearby slum and was reportedly trying his luck in earning some quick money, said a police official.

According to the police, Chaudhary allegedly sent a text message to the principal of Tagore Model Public School at Shalimar Bagh, demanding Rs 5 lakh from her within 24 hours. In the same text message, he also threatened to blow up the school if his demand was not fulfilled. He sent another message on Sunday morning, reminding the principal that 12 hours had already passed and he was waiting for the money. That is when the school authorities reported the matter to the police.
