To commemorate the 16 December gangrape victim, 800 students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), mostly girls, held a candle light march from JNU to Munrika bus stop. This march was held under the banner, ‘Live Without Fear’.

Members of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) and various activists from the varsity led the march, in which several other organisations also participated and raised voice against sexual harassment, women’s liberation and freedom for women.

Siyaa Bisht, a female student involved in the march, said, ‘We are trying to create a space for women and will have to promise ourselves that the movement will not stop. This march will definitely sound out the message to people of how the public space belongs to women too. We want laws against marital rapes.’

To maintain security, roads from JNU to Munirka were blocked, with the deployment of hundreds of police officials. Regular commuters on these roads faced a few problems.

Giving a political angle to the march Shazia Ilmi and Kumar Vishwas from the Aam Aadmi Party, tried to participate. However, they were sent back by the police.
