In the wake of rising instances of crime on the campus, the Jawaharlal Nehru University has decided to run an emergency 24*7 helpline service and set up a quick response team (QRT) on the campus.
The decision follows recommendations made by a 10-member committee, which was set up after the 31 July attack on a female student by her classmate.
A senior official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: ‘In order to have a crime free campus, the administration has decided to provide the facilities of a 24*7 helpline number and QRT team to look after the students. The chief security officer of JNU would establish a QRT system according to the requirements of the university. The QRT number would be made available on the university website.’
‘Since mobile connectivity is not too good on the system, the university has decided to set up a few telephone booths as well through which only the emergency helpline numbers will be accessible,’ the official added.
The varsity has also endorsed the committee’s recommendation to have battery-operated buses on the campus. The buses would run from 5 am till midnight from Poorvanchal and Paschimabad hostel to the North Gate of the campus. Some of the recommendations made by the committee are being endorsed with immediate effect while some will be implemented later.
