J&K entered the last eight stage by virtue of their first innings lead, which earned them three crucial points.
They ended tied on 28 points with Goa but qualified on the basis of their marginally better points quotient. J&K had a quotient of 1.006 as against Goa’s 1.005 after ending the fourth and final day at 87 for two in a chase of 228.
In 2000-01 season, which was held under a different format, the J&K team had qualified for the knockout stage but at that time they had reached the pre-quarterfinals, losing to Odisha by a massive 420-run margin. J&K will now square off against Punjab at Baroda. It was a remarkable achievement for the J&K team considering that many formidable sides such as seven-time champions Delhi, two-time winners Rajasthan, last year’s finalists Saurashtra and Gujarat failed to make it to the knockout stage.
The hosts began the day at a solid 103 for two but were all out for 272 as spinner Perveez Rasool claimed seven wickets at the expense of 87 runs. Tripura’s overnight batsmen Abhijit Dey (63), Kaushal Acharjee (35) began cautiously and had extended their partnership to 78 runs but Rasool dismissed both in a gap of four overs. After that skipper Yogesh Takawale (28) and Manisankar Murasingh (37) resisted the J&K attack for some time but eventually they were bundled out for 272 runs on the board.
The visitors then lost Adil Rishi (1) and Ian Dev Singh (9) cheaply but Bandeep Singh (37) and Perveez Rasool (35) batted well after that and easily drew the game.
Brief Scores Tripura 280 and 272 in 103.5 overs.(Abhijit Dey 63, Kaushik Acharjee 35; Perveez Rasool 7/87); J&K 325 and 87 for 2 in 25 overs.(Perveez Rasool 37 not out, Bandeep Singh 37; Manisankar Murasingh 1/12).
Omar hails team
New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday congratulated the state cricket team for reaching the quarterfinal stage of Ranji Trophy for the first time ever.
‘Congratulations to the J&K cricket team for reaching the quarters of the Ranji trophy. 1st time since 2000 so well done chaps,’ Abdullah said.
Union minsiter and J&K Cricket Association president Farooq Abdullah too complimented the state team for reaching the last-eight stage. ‘This is the result of the hard work put in by the boys and coach Bishan Singh Bedi,’ Abdullah said. He expressed hope the boys would do well in the quarterfinal against Punjab at the Moti Baug ground in Baroda from 8-12 January.
‘It’s a special feeling’
New Delhi: He has led from the front when it mattered the most and Jammu and Kashmir skipper Perveez Rasool says his team’s historic feat of reaching the quarter finals of the Ranji Trophy was a ‘special one’ and will motivate the players more.
‘I can’t explain you my feeling at the moment. We are among the top eight states in Ranji Trophy. The boys are just itching to meet Punjab and let me tell you that we are not scared of any opponents although they have Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh in their ranks. We are ready for a fight,’ Rasool said over the phone from Agartala. For Rasool, the qualification for the quarter-final and the fact that they will be playing in ‘B’ group was a ‘matter of pride’.
‘This performance promotes us to B group next year in which we will be locking horns with the teams which were in ‘Elite’ group earlier. This means that we would need to work even harder as a team. From here, the challenge to elevate ourselves to the next level starts,’ says Jammu and Kashmir’s first international cricketer.
Rasool played a stellar role in Jammu and Kashmir’s qualification as he first scored 83 to get the first innings lead and then ran through the Tripura line-up to take seven wickets which ensured they enjoyed a better run quotient than third placed Goa.
‘As a captain, it is my duty to perform in crunch situation. I am happy that I could peak at the right time,’ said 24-year-old Rasool, who has taken 21 wickets and scored 550 runs in the current season.Asked about the run quotient, Rasool laughed. ‘You can’t believe that I was sitting with a pen and paper and doing all sorts of calculations about how we can qualify for the knock-outs. I was doing all sorts of permutations about what score we can get Tripura out. I am happy that our plans worked well Thursday,’ Rasool said.
For Rasool, the team has some quality players, who need more exposure at the top level as they have the ingredients to get better. ‘This is a team which thrived on enjoying each other’s performance. We have very talented players like Adil (Rishi), Hardeep (Singh) and Bandeep (Singh) who have all done extremely well. The pacers Samiuallah Beigh and Mohammed Mudhasir have bowled their hearts out,’ the skipper said.
