Jail inmates injure themselves with blades after brawl

In a brawl in Delhi’s Rohini Jail, as many as 17 prisoners were injured after they started assaulting themselves with blades on Wednesday evening. A senior police official said that the incident took place after a fight broke out between two groups after one of the inmate refused to get inside the cell first. Meanwhile, sources in the Jail told Millennium Post that around 17 prisoners started raising slogans after two inmates of different gangs, who are said to be the ring leaders of the prisoners, were forced to enter barrack number 6. However, an ego clash happened between the duo and none of them was ready to get inside the barrack first. The duo started ignoring the instructions of the warden that later turned into warnings.

At around 7 pm, the two inmates, identified as Nitin and Shiva Suri were pushed inside the barrack at one go. This step was opposed to by the duo inmates and they started attacking the warden. When other security officials intervened, the duo formed one gang and asked other prisoners to unite and raise their voice against the alleged atrocities by of warden and other staff.

“Initially, they all started raising slogans and later they pulled out blades and started attacking themselves.  They have received self-inflicted injuries. After the intervention of other security officials, the situation was brought under control and they all were rushed to Ambedkar Hospital for treatment and were sent back to the jail soon,” a senior official in the Rohini Jail said.

A case has been registered under sections of rioting and obstructing a public servant from conducting duty and further investigations in the matter is on, another official said.
