Two summers back around this time, we were sipping White Russian with straws from takeaway plastic cans, nibbling on assorted street food, throwing furtive glances at dancers on tabletops in the bars behind and looking at the sun dipping into the sea in front. Life could not have been better.
So when Spice Route decided to celebrate Songkran (Thai New Year) in style, we couldn’t resist the temptation to pay them a visit. For those drawn to culture, Songkran is a Sanskrit word in Thai form which means the entry of the sun into any sign of the Zodiac. It is the traditional New Year of Thailand. People splash perfumed water on each other and on Buddha statues. And then, it’s time for the big eat.
As we entered Spice Route, no one splashed us with perfumed water, but the smell from the kitchen was enough to get us hooked. How would you like our culinary experience to start with whole prawns wrapped with por pia skin deep fried and served with sweet chilli and plum sauce? Yessss, you said? Well, Por Pia Kung it was for us followed by Kai Yang. These with Thai sticky rice is enough to embrace the deadly sin of gluttony!
But there was more. Just when we thought we could take in no more, the good chef got us chicken in Thai yellow curry and crispy sole fillet and Thai omelette! ‘I am a native of Thailand, every year I pay homage to this day by offering a taste of some delectable creations inspired by the classic and favourite local dishes,’ says Veena Aurora, Chef De cuisine at The Spice Route.
What a way to bring in a New Year!
