The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Income Tax officer, office superintendent (OS), senior tax assistant and tax assistant – all working in the office of Commissioner of Income Tax(TDS), Kolkata in a bribery case of Rs 60,000/-
The CBI had filed a case against the IT officer and OS under Section 120B of IPC and 7 of PC Act, 1988, on the allegation that the accused were demanding an illegal gratification from the complainant for issuing certificate for lower deduction under Section 197 of the Income Tax Act, 1961 to his firm(A firm of Chartered Accountants based at Kolkata).
The CBI laid a trap and caught the income tax officer and OS while accepting illegal gratification of Rs 50,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively, from the complainant. The arrested were produced before the Special Judge which sent them to seven days judicial custody.
