Is Delhi police playing safe with IM suspects?

Update: 2012-10-18 01:20 GMT
The arrest of another suspected Indian Mujahideen [IM] terrorist, who was involved in Pune serial blasts points towards the loopholes in the functioning of the Delhi Police. Earlier, on 11 October, Neeraj Kumar, commissioner of police, informed the media that three IM terrorists have been arrested. But on Wednesday, the special commissioner [special cell], S N Srivastava, said that they have already arrested the fourth accused of the Pune blast on 10 October from Jaipur.

The person who has been arrested by the Delhi Police special cell has been identified as Landge Irfan Mustafa, 30. Irfan hails from Maharashtra and was employed by TVS ICS as an autocad engineer between January  2008 and June 2009. In 2011, he had started a real estate business in Aurangabad.

According to Srivastava, the accused , along with the other three arrested terrorists, had revealed that they were using the hawala money for terrorists activities.

Earlier, Kumar had informed the media that Rs 3 lakh was provided to these terrorists by Fayaz Kagzi [Lashkar-e-Toiba operative] to carry out bomb blasts in Pune as well as in Delhi during the festive season.

On the one hand, Kumar, along with Srivastava, claims that all the terrorists have confided their role in Pune serial blasts. But while talking to Millennium Post, M S Khan, the counsel of the accused said, ‘the statement of the alleged accused were not taken on the basis of Section-164 CRPC [recording of confessions and statements], so the senior police officials claim that the suspected IM terrorists have confided their roles is not valid.’

According to Srivastav, on the basis of the information revealed by those arrested – Asad Khan, 33, Imran Khan, 31, and Sayed Feroz, 38 – the special cell team got to know about the hide-outs of Irfan, the suspected IM terrorist. Several raids were carried out, but he remained elusive. But the team got to know that he might go to Jaipur. and  on 10 October, Irfan was arrested from a bus stand in Jaipur.

Srivastav added, ‘After Irfan was arrested, he was produced in the court on 11 October and was sent to police custody till 30 october. On the whole, we have identified six members of the Pune serial blasts that were carried out to avenge Qateel Siddiqui’s murder in Yerweda jail in Pune.’

During the interrogation, Irfan revealed that he was asked to arrange a rented accommodation in Pune by Riyaz Bhatkal, the founder of IM. Later on, the other inmates of the terrorist activities stayed with him. Further, they were provided the cash to buy the electronic items to make IEDs.

COURT EXTENDS TERROR SUSPECTS’ CUSTODY TILL 27 OCTOBER

A Delhi court Wednesday extended till 27 October the police custody of three suspected Indian Mujahideen [IM] operatives allegedly involved in the 1 August Pune blasts. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vidya Parkash extended the custody of the three by 10 days after police said they needed to confront three of them with the fourth accused Landge Irfan Mustafa, who was arrested Oct 10 from Jaipur. ‘Consequently, all the ... three accused persons are further remanded to police custody till 27 October,’ said the court. The court observed that three alleged IM operatives are also required to be confronted with fourth accused [Landge Irfan Mustafa] who is already in police custody till 30 October.
