Almost one week after the death of a 20-year-old boy in Iran, Delhi police on Tuesday slapped the director of the Institute and the placement agent with human trafficking charges. The victim went to Iran after he was promised a job in the Merchant Navy. However, he reportedly died after prolonged illness while working there as a labourer. The family members are yet to receive his body.
On Tuesday, the family members of Pradeep Sharma, a resident of Burari, demonstrated outside the office of deputy commissioner of police (south) in the Hauz Khas area. On 7 October, Sharma went to Iran after a private institute, IPSR, introduced him to a placement agent and lured him to a job in the Merchant Navy. They asked him to deposit Rs eight lakhs against the promised job. His family members alleged that Sharma used to talk to them over phone, once a week. Sharma had expressed the harassment he faced during his work hours and was unwell on most occasions. On 10 May, his family members were informed that he died due to illness. Despite several attempts made to receive the body from Iran, they failed in their pursuits till late Tuesday evening.
Speaking to Millennium Post, a senior police official confirmed that a case under the section of 370 (buying or disposing of any person as a slave) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code have been registered against Ambuj Kumar, director of the institute and Vikas, the placement in-charge. The case has been registered at Mehrauli police station.
