Indian Medical Association (IMA) organised an event on women’s health on Wednesday. Leading health experts and social activists including former Asian marathon champion Sunita Godara, breast cancer expert Dr Sidharth Sahni, minimal access surgery expert Dr Arun Prasad, leading orthopedic surgeon Dr Raju Vaishya and nutrition expert Pallavi Vaishya called for stopping the marginalisation of women and asked women to fight for their empowerment and healthy life.
On this occasion IMA announced two web sites, which will provide a platform for the doctors and women at large to interact and discuss their health issues. Highlighting growing prevalence of cancer among Indian women, Sahni said, ‘Approximately 40 per cent of new cases of cancer in India afflict women. In the past decade, breast cancer has overtaken cervical cancer as the most common cancer among women in Indian cities such as Mumbai and Delhi.’
Dr Prasad said obesity among women is on the rise as well. Lack of adequate resources prevents women from poorer households using health services, said Vaishya.
