‘Our colleges should be recognised as an institution of excellence. It should have a globally comparable infrastructure,’ said Jaitley while addressing students at his felicitation ceremony organised by Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). He is also an alumnus of SRCC.
‘In Europe and USA, educational institutes have become centres for policy formation. Colleges allow that freedom to students and teachers where conflicting views can clash and ideas can emerge. That is the strength of these institutions’, he said. Jaitley, who is also a member of the governing body of the college emphasised that the need for the involvement of educational institutes in policy making can strengthen the economic growth of the nation. Elaborating further on the state of economy in the country, he said, ‘India’s growth, which was 8-9 per cent during the global economic crisis, slipped to below 5 per cent in the past two financial years.’
Stating that the economic reform which started in 1991 had unleashed the potential of the country and allowed people to grow, Jaitley said ‘One of my regrets, not personal regret, but for the country is that what we started in 1991, I only wish we had started a decade or two earlier.’
He added that through the economic reform, ‘We unleashed our true potential which allowed people to grow and find their space.’ Speaking further about the prestigious college (SRCC), he said, ‘When I travel around the country or even abroad, I find a good representation from the college. The alumni of this college have made a great impact. They are the ambassadors of the success of this institution.’
Arun Jaitely passed out from SRCC in 1970-73 and later graduated from Faculty of Law in Delhi University. He also served as the president of Delhi University Students’ Union in 1974-75.
