Incessant rain inundate Dibrugarh, educational institutes to remain shut

Heavy showers have caused water-logging in all 22 municipal ward areas with <g data-gr-id="22">knee</g> to waist-deep water in houses and roads, disrupting normal life, Dibrugarh district Deputy Commissioner (DC) MS <g data-gr-id="17">Manibhanan</g> said. However, he said the situation was under control and the administration was prepared for to tackle any kind of eventuality. 

The rains and <g data-gr-id="18">water-logging</g> have cut off electrify and water supply with many power transformer posts being submerged, rendering them dangerous, the official said. With water-logging in educational institutions, the district administration has ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in the city. May roads are also waterlogged. Residents have to use boats to commute in the city. 

Meanwhile, one person died of electrocution in the Sankardeb Colony area of the city on Sunday, when the plug of his inverter fell into <g data-gr-id="19">knee-high</g> water in his house. The victim was trying to disconnect its battery power supply when the incident took place, said an Assam State Electricity Board official. 

The water has also entered the official residence of the district Superintendent of Police prompting him to shift to the Circuit House located on a higher area.  The Assam Medical College Hospital wards are also inundated and ambulances could not enter the hospital due to water-logging on its premises, hospital authorities said. 

The DC said the Dibrugarh Town Protection Drain (DTPD) constructed in 1950 was unable to take the load of the rainwater, causing the water to <g data-gr-id="25">back flow</g> into the city. Water from the tea estates surrounding the city and the National Highway along it also added to the compounding water-logging problem, he added.
