IGNOU to inaugurate Mother Teresa chair

Indira Gandhi National Open University will be inaugurating its Mother Teresa chair on 12 March at its headquarters in New Delhi as directed by the Prime Minister’s Office.

During the centenary celebration of the birth of Mother Teresa, the Prime Minister’s Office, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development, had directed all the central universities to establish a chair in the name of Mother Teresa as a mark of respect for her social services.

The objectives of the initiative include wide range of socio-economic developments including activities targetting the HIV infected, leprosy patients, street children and skill development of vulnerable population. Other measures under the initiative include organising conferences, workshops on socially relevant topics and constituting awards and scholarships.

The Mother Teresa Chair will be inaugurated by Oscar Fernandes, Member of Parliament and Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Human Resource Development.

The initiative was proposed by the School of Social Work and the Academic Council during and was approved by the Board of Management, IGNOU during its 106th meeting.

Previously, IGNOU had named its computer division building after Mother Teresa and organising an annual Mother Teresa Memorial Lecture since 2008. IGNOU also has named the gold medal for the Masters in Social Work programme, both open and distance learning, as Mother Teresa Memorial Award.
