IGNOU for flexible education

‘There is a need of more flexibility in learning which can be possible by introducing credit bit accumulation concept, by encouraging other universities to allow their students to take courses of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) as a part of their curricula,’ said O P Bajpai, former director, National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research (NITTTR), Chandigarh, under Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), while inaugurating a two-day orientation programme in which about 72 academic counsellors of the university participated. .

The two-day orientation programme was organised in collaboration with regional services division, IGNOU and Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education, IGNOU at Mahamana Malaviya Mission auditorium at Malaviya Smriti Bhawan. Bajpai also emphasised that orientation of academic counsellors must be done by incorporating technology and it should also be used for the students.

R P Singh, senior regional director, Regional Centre Delhi-2, said, ‘IGNOU is offering quality higher education through the open and distance learning (ODL) mode. The university serves the educational aspirations of nearly 2.7 million students in India and 40 other countries with a network of 67 regional centres. He also provided a brief profile of the Regional Centre Delhi 2.

The mandate of IGNOU, various components of ODL and the cost effectiveness of imparting education through distance education in contrast to conventional institutions were explained in detail.

Further, the diversity of IGNOU learners in terms of age, gender, social status and financial backwardness posed many challenges before academic counsellors, which need to be addressed in more practical and efficient manner.
