The Institute of Company Secretaries Of India (ICSI) inaugurated its first international chapter in Dubai, UAE, at a function in the presence of ICSI President Nesar Ahmad, Council Member B Narasimhan, Chief Executive Sutanu Sinha and a galaxy of professionals including chartered accountants and cost accountants from Dubai.
Delivering the inaugural speech, Ahmad said that the formation the first ICSI international Chapter in Dubai as a major initiative towards internationalising the profession of company secretaries across the globe, commensurate with the vision of the Institute 'to be a global leader in promoting good corporate governance'.
He emphasised that the Dubai Chapter will be a gateway for the Institute not only in West Asia but also for promoting the profession in other jurisdictions which are well connected with Dubai. Ahmad also informed about the changes being taken place in corporate functioning in India through the newly introduced Companies Bill placed before Parliament.
Sunil Bahri, a company secretary from Dubai, was nominated chairman of the Dubai Chapter. In his speech, Bahri narrated the prospective plan of the Dubai Chapter to promote the profession of company secretaries in West Asia.
Bahri apprised about the promotion of good governance initiatives in the UAE and also referred to the decree issued by the government in Dubai towards mandatory appointment of women director's on the boards of Dubai-based companies.
Welcoming the professionals present at the programme, Narasimhan outlined the developments taking place in trade and commerce in India, including capital market reforms, especially on matters pertaining to corporate governance.
Sinha apprised about the quality service provided by company secretaries and emphasised that maintaining of quality is of foremost importance for professionals and upgradation of knowledge and skill are two essential tools to keep high professional standards.
He pointed out that the Institute has been conducting its examination in Dubai for decades. With the setting up of this Chapter, members in West Asia would encourage youngsters to pursue the ICSI course, which is highly rewarding.
Since the Institute is already imparting company secretaryship course through its e-learning portal, it would be quite convenient for students abroad to pursue this course from their own place, added Sinha.
