The United Progressive Alliance government landed in serious trouble after it was found that they themselves allowed American spy agencies to set up one of the servers in India. Through this server, an American agency had snooped on vast array of Indian databases containing emails, online chats and browsing histories of millions. According to top level sources, ‘No physical infrastructure can be set-up in India without the concurrence of the government. In this case it is very clear that Indian government allowed US agencies to snoop on millions
of Indians.’
Indian government is also going very slow to bring back former senior Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) officer Ravinder Singh who was working for American intelligence, being the joint secretary of RAW handling US affairs. Way back in January 2009, a Delhi court had already declared him as a proclaimed offender. But the CBI informed the court that it had not been able to execute the non-bailable warrant against this officer, since the said official continues to reside in America.
Both the Opposition and the Left have slammed the government for compromising national security.
The CPI(M) on Friday charged the government with collaborating with the United States in its electronic snooping activities in India and sought immediate closure of the facilities provided to it in the country. ‘The latest disclosures in the documents provided by American whistleblower Edward Snowden show that the Indian government is collaborating with the United States of America in its electronic surveillance in India,’ the party Politburo said in a statement.
It said the US has installed some 700 servers in 150 locations around the world, one of which is near New Delhi, as part of a hitherto undisclosed programme called ‘Xkeyscore’, under which electronic snooping is undertaken by the US National Security Agency.
‘The programme is meant for searching through the vast database containing emails, online chats and browsing histories of millions of individuals,’ said the CPI(M). Maintaining that the government had earlier justified US snooping in the name of tracking terrorist activities, it said ‘now it is clear that this justificatory statement was made because the Government of India itself is a collaborating partner in the global spy network of the US, which undermines the sovereignty of India. The CPI(M) deplores this action of the government.’
It said external affairs minister Salman Khurshid had earlier gone ‘so far as to say that it is not snooping but only an analysis of the call patterns.’ It demanded that the Manmohan Singh government forthwith stop collaborating with the United States in its extensive surveillance on Indian citizens and close down the electronic spying facilities provided to it in India.
On a similar note, BJP spokesperson Bizay Sonkar Shastri said, ‘This is not the first time that America is snooping on India, they have done this in past. We should take strong action against this through diplomatic channels.’
Surprisingly after getting caught red-handed the central government has not come out with any comments on these sensational allegations. Both the spokespersons of the ministry of home affairs and ministry of external affairs refused to comment on this issue.
According to senior intelligence source, ‘A large section of top politicians, bureaucrats, intelligence officials and some bankers are working as conduits for the US intelligence for a long time in India.
Some of the top politicians’ and bureaucrats’ children are studying or working in the USA through this intelligence network, and are being funded or hired by different US government-sponsored foundations. Through various private equity and hedge funds, several US interest groups have influenced the Indian media in a big way and many media professionals are also working in tandem with them.’
The source also added that various former RAW and IB officials are also being hired by varied think-tanks and societies or foundations, funded by the US, where their actual role is nothing but working for them as a spy. Some key officials of few top corporates are also working in close relationship with US intelligence agencies .
According to the source ,’In many cases with the pretext of sharing anti-terror content ,valuable information about India is being passed on to the US.’ Some of the earlier Wikileaks reports had some details which might be a huge embarrassment for many influential people in our country.
