Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday described the railway budget as ‘hopeless’. ‘It is a hopeless budget,’ Gandhi told journalists after railway minister Sadananda Gowda presented his maiden budget in Parliament. Four Congress supporters were detained for protesting and creating a ruckus outside Gowda’s residence here on Tuesday against the railway fare hike. ‘The protest is over. Four people have been detained and we are in a process to register a case against those who created ruckus outside the minister’s house,’ additional commissioner of police Jatin Narwal said.

The supporters, including women, gathered outside Gowda’s residence in Tyagraj Marg in Lutyens Delhi around 3 pm and staged the protest. Congress leader Mukesh Sharma removed the minister’s name plate and stamped on it. The Congress-NCP government in Maharashtra blasted the Railway Budget for virtually ignoring the plight of Mumbaikars as well as the people of the state.

‘Railway Budget disappointed Maharashtra,’ chief minister Prithviraj Chavan tweeted soon after the NDA government’s maiden budget was tabled in Parliament. Deputy chief minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar found the budget disappointing for the people of the city and the state.
