Taking serious note of a large number of posts lying vacant in Delhi police, the home ministry has directed it to fill more than 7,000 vacancies, including for 1,000 women police personnel.
The ministry has found that 6,051 already sanctioned posts are lying vacant in Delhi police and directed it to fill the existing vacancies and then only send proposal for sanction of new posts, an official said.
A total of 19,090 posts had been sanctioned by the ministry to Delhi police from 2007 onwards and in addition to this, it has approved creation of 1,084 posts exclusively for women police personnel in March in the wake of huge uproar over the gang rape of a girl on 16 December, 2012.
'Delhi police is expected to utilise all its resources judiciously, to make the vehicles available at its disposal fully operational and to fill up the posts lying vacant with them,' the official said.
With a view to strengthen its mobility, transportation, movement and the safety and security of the residents of the national capital, the central government has been providing vehicles to Delhi police on regular basis.
The Centre sanctioned purchase of 93 vehicles against condemnation of old vehicles and 564 vehicles as fresh procurement in 2009-10, 43 vehicles against condemnation and 170 vehicles as new procurement in 2010-11.
Additionally, 73 vehicles were provided against condemnation and 155 vehicles as new procurement in 2011-12 and 46 vehicles against condemnation in 2012-13.
A total of 370 vehicles to be used as PCR vans have been sanctioned by the home ministry to Delhi police in February.
