A phone call on Tuesday claiming there was a bomb in an airline office located at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International airport sent the staff into a tizzy, but it turned out to be a hoax, airport sources said. The passengers were immediately asked to vacate the area.
An emergency committee was constituted, as part of the ‘routine drill’, which found that the call was a hoax. The phone call was described as ‘non-specific’, said an airport source.
‘Somebody called on a landline phone installed at the counter of a private airline at Terminal 3 and said that there is a threat to the airport. The call was received at around 4.15 pm. Precautionary steps were taken soon after the call was received,’ said deputy commissioner of police (IGI Airport) MI Haider.
Security agencies, including CISF, Bomb Squad, Dog Squad and Quick Reaction Team of the Delhi police launched a massive search operation in the airport area and everybody present in the airport was properly frisked, airport authorities said.
‘We have not found anything during our search so far. The operations are still going on. As far as the caller is concerned, although he could not be immediately be identified as there was no caller id on the phone, efforts are on to trace him,’ said Haider.
