Himachal CLP meeting today

Update: 2012-12-22 02:26 GMT
The Himachal Pradesh Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will meet in Shimla on Saturday to elect the state’s new chief minister.

Delhi chief minister Shiela Dikshit, AICC general secretary Janardhan Dwivedi and Congress incharge for the state Birender Singh will attend the meeting, Dwivedi told reporters, a day after Congress ousted BJP from power in the state with a wafer-thin majority.

Former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, who was made the PCC chief on the eve of elections and who ran a spirited campaign, appears to be a front runner in the chief minister’s race. He has already said that Congress president Sonia Gandhi will decide who the chief minister will be. At the AICC briefing, party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary said ‘every MLA is eligible to become chief minister in a democracy’ but at same time reminded that Virbhadra Singh had himself said that he was ‘entrusted’ with a responsibility, which he had discharged.

Another party leader speaking separately on the condition of anonymity said that there is no likelihood of any surprise decision in Himachal Pradesh, where Virbhadra is considered the main contender within the party for the top job.
