Heavy downpour puts break on commuters across Delhi

Heavy downpour in the city on Sunday caused major traffic snarls in various parts of the city. Waterlogged roads led to slow traffic movement in areas near Parliament Street, Ring Road, ITO, Aurobindo Marg, Laxmi Nagar, Moti Bagh, Ashram Chowk and several other areas.

A traffic officer said movement of commuters was badly affected in areas such as Saket, MG Road, Azadpur and Kashmere Gate. ‘There was slow traffic movement in Mori Gate, Dhaula Kuan and Masjid Moth and Connaught Place’, the officer added.

Water-logging was also reported from Mahipalpur village following which traffic moving from Gurgaon towards Vasant Kunj was severely affected. The Delhi Traffic Police control room received complaints of slow movement of traffic from Bulward Road, Hakikat Nagar, Parliament Street and various other areas in East and North Delhi.

‘I was supposed to go to Connaught Place from Laxmi Nagar. It took an hour to cross the ITO intersection despite it being a Sunday today. It hardly takes 15 minutes to cross this area otherwise’, Sanjeev Mishra, a commuter, said. Areas around Ring Road, Ashram, Mathura Road, Connaught Place, ITO, Nehru Place and MG Road faced the worst traffic jams during the peak hours of the day. Vehicles moving around the Delhi Transport Corporation’s bus terminal in Sarai Kale Khan faced a harrowing time. Due to major water logging in the terminals, the buses were parked on the main road.

Streets were waterlogged due to clogged drains and thus the traffic crawled.
‘There was almost a 3km long traffic jam in the Ring Road area due to the heavy water logging. It took me over two hours to reach office, which badly affected my work’, Rajiv Shukla, an office goer, said.
