A 18-year-old boy, who suffered a grievous injury in his wind and food pipe which disrupted his breathing and swallowing, was successfully cured after doctors at AIIMS. The doctors were perplexed and decided that the surgery would be performed after taking the patient on a cardio-pulmonary bypass so that the functions of the heart and lungs could be done by the bypass machine till the time surgery was performed. “The other surgeons later performed additional surgery on the patients’ neck and the wounds of the chest were closed with temporary diversions of food pipe,” said Dr SC Sharma of ENT dept.
