Head-on collision of two trucks claims three lives

Three persons including two truck drivers were killed after the two vehicles they were driving collided head on at Kaliachawk area of Malda on National Highway 34 on early Thursday morning triggering tension in the area.

The incident occurred at around 4 am when a Malda bound loaded truck collided head on with another truck coming from the opposite direction.

The other truck was carrying cement bags and on its way to Farakka.

Police personnel, close to the investigation, said that incident took place at Bhanga area.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the tyre of the Farakka bound truck burst as a result of which, the driver of the truck, identified as Sanjay Ram could not control the vehicle and hit the other truck coming from the opposite direction.

Police said that the front portions of both the vehicles were damaged completely. This had eventually led to the death of the both the drivers.

The helper who was in the Farakka-bound truck was also killed in the incident.

Police are yet to ascertain the identity of the other truck driver and the helper of a truck.

They came to know during the investigation that there was no helper in the Malda bound truck.

The impact of the accident was so heavy that the local people heard a loud crash and when they visited the spot they found that the front portions of both the trucks completely damaged in the accident.

They took part in the rescue operation but failed to take out the victims from inside the vehicle.

After being informed, police reached the spot and recovered three bodies from inside the mangled portion of the trucks.

All the three victims were declared brought dead after being taken to the Malda Medical College 
and Hospital.

Police have started a detail probe into the incident. They are also investigating if there was any other reason behind the accident.

Police are also investigating if the drivers were inebriated. The incident had created traffic jam on National Highway 34 in Malda for few hours in the wee hours.

Police are yet to ascertain the actual cause of the accident. A probe is on.
