HC issues notice to hospitals for turning away cancer patient

 Delhi High Court issued notices to Dharamshila Cancer Hospital and ESIC hospital on denial of free treatment to <g data-gr-id="21">17 year old</g> <g data-gr-id="18">Soumaya</g> Ranjan suffering from Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, a form of cancer. The hospitals have been directed to submit replies in the court on June 10. Millennium Post had reported the matter on June 1 in a news report ‘Despite free beds, hospitals <g data-gr-id="19">turns</g> away poor cancer patient’.

“The hospitals showed highly ignorant and pathetic approach in dealing with the case. The patient was left at the gate of Dharamshila Cancer Hospital for five days in such a critical condition,” said Ashok Agarwal, the counsel of the patient who is also a member of Economically Weaker Section beds monitoring committee. Soumaya’s father, an ESIC-insured person, Basant Kumar, had filed petition against ESIC for its refusal to make referral to empanelled Dharamshila Hospital for treatment of his son and also against Dharamshila Hospital for arbitrary denial of treatment.
