In a move clearly directed at replacing old guards with fresh faces, Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel on Wednesday appointed former Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) president Ashish Sood as the convener of the party's campaign committee for upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. A sitting councillor from Janakpuri West, Sood has been heralded onto the position which was scheduled to go to former city BJP president Harshvardhan. Sood is also the chairman of the Remunerative Projects (RP) Cell in South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
In the past this position has been held by veterans like VK Malhotra and OP Kohli. Incidentally all party stalwarts have been put into the manifesto committee headed by Harshvardhan. The other members of the manifesto committee are former city BJP president Vijender Gupta, former finance minister of Delhi government Jagdish Mukhi, three-time MLA Mohan Singh Bisht and the senior most councillor in the city, Subhash Arya.
The name of the party's senior-most leader and leader of opposition in Delhi Vidhan Sabha V K Malhotra is missing from the list which includes 20 odd committees to spearhead the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections campaign. According to sources, Malhotra will be replaced by senior party leader Vijay Jolly, who is lobbying hard to get a party ticket from Malhotra's assembly segment, Greater Kailash.
Another prominent rival of Vijay Goel, former mayor and secretary of national BJP Arti Mehra has been made in-charge of an innocuous social media committee. Similarly, party's chief whip in Delhi assembly Sahib Singh Chauhan has been appointed member in the allegation committee along with senior leader Meenakhsi Lekhi and Jai Bhagwan Aggarwal to be headed by Ravinder Bansal. Former student leader and Malviya Nagar councillor Satish Upadhayay, who is also a close aide of Goel, has been appointed convenor of the powerful media committee with Harish Khurana, son of former Delhi chief minister Madan Lal Khurana, Amitabh Sinha, Raj Kumar Sharma and Bala Subramanium as members. Upadhayay is also chairman of education committee in South DMC. Youth leaders of the party like Rajiv Babbar will head the new voters contact committee with youth wings head Gaurav Khari and his deputy Vikas Dahia as members. Former mayor of North DMC Meera Aggarwal has been appointed as member in women coordination committee headed by party's general secretary Shikha Rai.
