Green diwali distant dream for Delhi

The message of Green diwali from the Delhi government failed to travel far and wide especially across the Yamuna to the east and across the ridge to the north, as these two areas registered very high concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) on diwali night. According to Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) data, on diwali, the level of pollution was high despite very few vehicles on the road.

According to  a DPCC official: ‘The pollution level was almost as high as an ordinary day when vehicles ply in these areas in huge volumes during peak traffic hours in the evening.’

The maximum concentration of CO gas on Diwali was in Civil Lines area in north Delhi which recorded 11.37 mg per metre cube at 10.30 pm on Tuesday,  around 7.37 mg per meter cube higher than normal. According to scientists of DPCC, the recommended level of CO in the air is 4 mg per metre cube. Surprisingly, the concentration of the gas at 7.00 pm on Wednesday, during the peak traffic hours was recorded 11.14 mg per metre cube.

The second highest concentration of CO on diwali was in Anand Vihar area in east Delhi which was recorded 8.5 mg per meter cube at 10.00 pm and minimum was in IGI airport which was 2.88 mg per metre cube at 10.30 pm. Similarly, in R K Puram area the concentration of the poisonous gas at 9.00 pm on diwali was 8.2 mg per meter cube which was recorded 6.00 mg per meter cube at 6.30 pm on Wednesday.
