The Delhi government will organise a grand fashion show titled ‘Smart and Sexy@70’ for senior citizens as an effort to celebrate International Day for Elders on 1 October.
The department of Social Welfare has sought the cooperation of different departments of government apart from the NGOs and private agencies. Satbir Bedi, principal secretary (Social Welfare and WCD) said that cooperation from departments like Delhi Transport Corporation, Delhi Tourism, Directorate of Education has also been sought.
Delhi Tourism will organize poster and painting competition in all three Dilli Haats and also ensure that on the 1 October, elderly people entering Dilli Haats are welcomed by a flower. DTC will carry messages in the form of stickers in buses appealing people and motivating them to protect and respect senior citizens.
Education department will organise the painting competition among school children on the theme of safeguarding, protecting and respecting the elders.
Delhi Police have prepared greeting cards to extend wishes to elderly people. Apart from this, a grand function will be organised at India Gate. ‘Senior citizens and elderly are the store house of knowledge and treasure of experiences. They need support, security and protection of their interests in the hands of the society. It is a matter of great concern that it is the family members which treat the elderly neglected and keep distance from them,’ said Bedi.
