Worried over increasing number of cases of high blood pressure across the country, the union health ministry has conceptualised dedicating a particular day every year to highlight the dangers of hypertension.

While speaking at a function on hypertension here on Saturday, union health minister Harsh Vardhan said, ‘I am preparing the ministry to meet the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCD).

Hypertension, diabetes, cancers, coronary artery disease, etc, are projected by WHO as the biggest gnawers of our public health budget in the next decade.’

Blaming the modern lifestyle for most of non-communicable diseases, the health minister said, ‘The roots of most NCD, including hypertension, lie in the modern, sedentary lifestyle. Therefore, more resources than before would be deployed for the objective of raising public awareness on preventive measures and early diagnosis.’

The health minister also backed promotion of yoga to control the spread of hypertension.

In the country, hypertension is currently the leading NCD risk and estimated to be attributable for nearly 10 per cent of all deaths. Adult hypertension prevalence has risen dramatically over the past three decades from 5 per cent to between 20-40 per cent in urban areas and 12-17 per cent in rural areas. Most people don’t know they are suffering from hypertension until it is too late.
