Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi on Thursday said that her ministry is doing it all to empower women, save girl children and provide food to malnourished children. She added that the government would soon restructure the National Commission for Women (NCW) and equip it with more power.
When asked on the progress of the Nirbhaya Fund, Gandhi said that crisis centres would be set up across the country to help women in distress. The first such centre will be opened in Raipur within a week. On ‘Beti Bachao Beti <g data-gr-id="18">Padhao</g>’ programme, the minister said, the initiative is yielding good results and will help dealing with the skewed child sex ratio.
On any proposed changes in the anti-dowry law, the minister said, at present there is no such proposal under consideration. When asked about the steps being taken for empowering women, Gandhi said the percentage of women in police forces in Union Territories is being increased. She added that her ministry would also urge all states to increase women representation in police forces.
