A report said uniform tariff model for all discoms, during the transition period of 2002 to 2008 had helped the discoms concentrate in reduction in commercial losses through better collection efficiency and reduction in technical losses through reasonable toning up of their infrastructure. ‘This resulted in substantial financial benefits which were passed on to the consumers, leading to decelerated pace of tariff hikes and also lower financial support from the state government,’ it said. The BJP as well as various resident welfare associations have been opposing power tariff hike of 26 per cent for domestic consumers in July, demanding a roll back. Arvind Kejriwal and his supporters have also launched an agitation demanding withdrawal of the hike. The tariff was hiked by 22 per cent in August last year. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has been justifying the hike, saying the rates were increased as discoms were incurring heavy losses.
