Govt plans to catch them young

After having its highest medal haul in the recently concluded London Olympics, Delhi government is serious about promoting sports at junior levels. According to sources, a proposal will be on the cabinet table in the coming weeks, when the government would increase its facilities, including infrastructure and prize money, for sportspersons to motivate young boys and girls to excel in the field.

A senior official said, ‘Delhi government is committed to providing sports facilities to all students in Delhi. Famous sportsperson gain a lot after winning a major tournament. Government feels that it should encourage sportspersons at junior level, so that more and more students choose sports as career, if they are good at it’.

Earlier, cabinet discussed the proposal, during which chief minister Sheila Dikshit said that there should be some uniformity in distributing cash rewards to eminent sportspersons of the city.

Citing example of Olympic silver medal winner Sushil Kumar and Under-19 cricket World cup winning captain Unmukt Chand, chief minister said that the former received Rs 2 crore and the latter a meagre Rs 25 lakh.

Reportedly, Dikshit asked to form a policy to give bounties in a uniform manner.

While inaugurating three-day All India Rajiv Gandhi Gold Cup tournament, organised by Directorate of Education on Monday, Minister of Education, Kiran Walia said, ‘Government will promote sports activities in all schools and educational institutions to provide better facilities to students who wish to make sports their career. The government has increased the prize money of the sports activities to give a boost to the young generation. Apart from this, government has also ensured participation of physically-challenged students in the sports activities, so that they can have better opportunities to participate in the sports activities along with other students.’

In the proposal, four games, including judo, wrestling, badminton and basketball, will be given special importance. Sources revealed that the ages, which the government will focus to target early will be divided into three groups-14, 17 and 19 years of age.

Talking to Millennium Post, additional director, Sports, Delhi government, Satpal said, ‘It is an ongoing process to motivate and catch young sportspersons early. We have already taken many steps, but the officials are planning to increase the fund and other details. At this Olympics, we had two medals from the city. Our target for 2016 will be at least five medals from the city.’

In the wake of promoting sports in the city, Directorate of Education has decided to construct a swimming pool in the stadium of Bawana to extend the facility of swimming to the swimmers in schools.

Meanwhile, the Education minister will also move a proposal to government seeking pension for the Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award winners of the country so that they feel honoured and proud.
