Govt grants minority status to Jains

Update: 2014-01-21 00:26 GMT
In a significant political development before the upcoming election, the union cabinet has decided to approve minority status to the Jain community on Monday. Sources said the ‘quick approval’ came following Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s request to PM Manmohan Singh.

Earlier, on Sunday, Rahul briefed the PM about Jain delegates led by union minister Pradeep Jain requesting for a long-pending minority status. Sources said the delegates told Rahul if they get the status then central funds will be earmarked for them, which they can utilise for welfare programmes and scholarships for the community.
