Stressing on increasing crop productivity, Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh on Thursday said the NDA government is keen to introduce modern techniques in farming. He said that Prime Minister narendra Modi attaches importance to revitalisation of the agriculture sector through modernisation of farming practices, thereby increasing crop productivity, without compromising on quality.

“Measures announced by the Centre like the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojna, Soil Health Card, etc, to ensure more crop per drop are aimed at improving efficiency of farm activities and increasing productivity,” Singh said at the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) general council meeting on Thursday. He said while increased productivity is essential for the agriculture sector, improved post harvest handling and processing also play a significant role in ensuring value addition, reducing wastage and transporting good quality products to markets.

“Agriculture remains central to India’s economy and the livelihood of a large number of families is linked to this sector. Also, it is a fact that country is a leading producer of several commodities such as cereals, fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs and jute,” said Singh, who is also the president of NCDC’s general council.

Singh said the NCDC would continue to support government’s efforts towards the development of cooperatives in agriculture and allied sectors during the year. “The focus would be on consolidation of the existing infrastructure and units established by the cooperatives, especially for value addition
and processing of farmers’ produce,” said Singh.
