‘Govt committed towards social betterment’

 Kiran Walia, minister of social welfare said the government is committed to working towards a society that cares for its senior citizens, the disabled and especially gifted members of society. To ensure provisions for basic care and sustenance of this vulnerable segment, the department has taken a comprehensive view of the issues pertaining to such people and adopted several major initiatives that range from financial support to shelters. 

The deputy commissioners (revenue) have been vested with powers for protection and life and property of senior citizens. The per sitting allowance of non-office members of maintenance tribunals and appellate tribunals has been enhanced from Rs 500 to Rs 1000 . 
56 NGOs working for the welfare of differently-abled persons have been registered by the department. 

The ‘Awaaz Uthao’ programme was launched by Sheila Dikshit on 8 March, 2011. The aim of these collectives is not only to aid and help the victims of sexual assault but to also carry out safety audits of their areas.
