Both the ruling party and the BJP are trying to woo people in the run up to the upcoming Delhi assembly elections offering onions at low prices at their respective stalls. On Monday, Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel sold the vegetable at Rs 25 per kg from BJP-opened stalls, while government outlets were selling it at Rs 40-45 per kg. Meanwhile, a BJP member, Anil Yadav, has promised every woman from two slums two kg of onions each, as a Rakshabandhan gift, if they tie a Rakhi on his wrist on Tuesday.
The selling of onions at cheapest possible prices was followed by 'war of words' between the two parties. While Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel hit out at the government for failing to control the price of onion in the city and demanded dismissal of Haroon Yusuf, miniter for food and civil supplies, chief minister Sheila Dikshit responded by saying that only Delhi government has the sole right to sell onions at low prices. Goel set up a stall at Town Hall on Monday morning where he sold onions at Rs 25 per kg. The BJP workers continued at the stall till late in the evening. In the Tilak Nagar area Delhi BJP spokesperson Rajiv Babbar sold onions in his father's constituency at Rs 35 per kg.
