Girl power!

Such were the thoughts of Indu Anand, Principal of Janki Devi Memorial college, University of Delhi, on the occasion of the inaugural ceremony of Symphony - The annual college festival, 2013-14. The festival was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp by the principal, Indu Anand and the esteemed invitees. The chief guest on the occasion was Ayaan Ali Khan, renowned sarod maestro, son and disciple of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan. Other guests included Anu Malhotra, renowned film-maker, and Reema Sareen, actor/model and founder of Bollyfit.

In her address to the students, the principal stressed the need for women to empower themselves in order to empower the world. Being an eminent scholar as well as a successful administrator, she provides the students with inspiration in this regard, in word and deed. She asked the students to use the platform provided by Symphony to showcase their talents and also encouraged a harmonious amalgamation of diverse societies without being limited by borders. After declaring the festival open, she invited the chief guest to address the students.

Ayaan Ali Khan, congratulated the college on the occasion and shared some thoughts he has had as a disciple of music. He urged the students to respect their elders as well as their teachers in their quest for progress in life as their blessings provide the impetus for their growth. He also expressed his desire to perform at JDMC in the near future. Anu Malhotra, in her address, expressed great appreciation for the theme of Symphony, and shared anecdotes from her travels across the country. Reema Sareen also applauded the enthusiasm of the students and professed a desire to perform with the students in the future.

The inauguration was also graced with musical performances by the Indian Music Society accompanied by Gurinder H Singh and  Prerna Arora from the Music Department. It was followed by a beautiful Kathak performance by Nupur, the dance society of the college.

The two day festival offers a multitude of platforms to demonstrate the literary, artistic and cultural abilities of students across the country. Despite heavy rainfall, events such as Footloose, Bardoratory, Jaborwocky, The Q/A, Let’s Dance, Samsrishti, Darkroom and Images saw the participation of students from across Delhi.
