Ghaziabad brings women constables to the rescue

Update: 2013-03-25 01:20 GMT
There’s good news for those disappointed with the behaviour of the cops in Ghaziabad in the past and afraid to approach them for help. Police stations in Ghaziabad are all set for an image make-over with the posting of a quartet of women constables at the station ‘reception’. The members of the fairer sex would, officials hope, add an element of sympathy and efficiency to the cops’ dealings with the common people.

As part of the initiative taken by the police chief, every police station in Ghaziabad now has a 'reception' area with four lady constables on duty to receive complaints from the people. These women constables would maintain their separate registers and brief the police chief in the evening through a wireless communication, about the complaints received between 10  am to 6 pm everyday and the action that has been taken in each case. 'I was inundated with the complaints against the police officials for not registering FIRs. Everyday, I had to spend hours listening to these complaints and telling police station officers to register complaints and take action in the cases filed,’ explained Nitin Tiwari, senior superintendent of police (SSP), who took charge of the district a fortnight back.

Among the four constables posted at the reception, two have the duty of listening and writing down the complaints and maintaining the register, while the other two have been assigned the job of forwarding it to concerned police post and officers for action.
