Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is going to use satellite imaging technology to identify illegal construction in the area. The authority has selected three international companies which have expertise in this field and the company quoting lowest cost for the project would be assigned the job.
'GDA would be the first organisation in the world to use this technology to prevent illegal construction in its area up to such accuracy. Even any minor deviation from the approved lay out plan would be recorded in our control room which would be followed by immediate action,'said Santosh Kumar Yadav, vice chairman of GDA. He further added that the technology would use highest available resolution and companies have assured a resolution of image in the order of one centimetre.

The authority has decided to use the technology on a pilot project basis which would be extended to the rest of the areas very soon. Yadav further explained that the system has many benefits from better city development, structurally safe buildings for earthquakes, unbiased auto reporting, high reduction in field visits yet accurate reporting of micro level construction with the setbacks of plots.

The system would detect any kind of horizontal or vertical change in the existing buildings or erection of new building or nay construction or development over any public land. 'We hope the system would be operational in the next six months,'added Yadav. The technology, according to officers of the authority, would be the first such innovation in the country by any local body or development authority. 'I would help us in regular monitoring of the construction activities in the area and also any illegal construction on the allocated flats, plots for buildings,'said Yadav.

A presentation of the system was made by the three selected companies in GDA head quarter on Monday before a national level expert committee (NLEC) having members from planning, IT, universities, and research institutions across the country.
The members unanimously appreciated the first of its kind system pushing the technologies to its limits and explained it as ultimate solution from controlled developments in the cities and its surrounding areas.
The OSD of GDA D P Singh said that the auto system would identify the construction changes in monthly interval.
