When a band defines themselves with a word that sounds somewhat like a bubble bursting, they perhaps are out to do something very different.
Meet Plok, a Delhi-based band that had been around for two years and counting and by the look of it, things are shaping up pretty good for these guys.
While they claim to not have spent sleepless nights ripping apart dictionaries and thesauruses to decide on a name for the band, the story goes that the idea was to break stereotypes that surround bands in general. While they aren’t closed to any sort of genre or experimentations in their original compositions, they have some musical influences to live by. However, breaking this bubble of prototypes, comes Plok.
This five member band is made up of Anirudh Subhramaniam (on the guitar) along with Tushar Rawal; Neeraj Aggarwala on vocals, Aveleon Giles Vaz on the drums and Yugank Mishra on bass.
Plok came into being with Anirudh and Neeraj collaborating in 2010 and then taking on three more members to form the band over the next one year. While Anirudh and Neeraj met through Artistes Unlimited — a city based choir — the rest of the band came in through personal contacts. Tushar is a junior from school, says Anirudh. Tushar Rawal was on a search of a drummer and a vocalist, while Anirudh and Neeraj were looking to put a band together, adds Anirudh. And then the rest just fell into place.
While Anirudh and Neeraj were already working on original compositions together since 2010, the whole band came into place only last year. In fact, the band came together only six months before their first gig.
Original compositions are their forte — by the look of it. But the band members say that when they are playing for a bigger audience for a longer time, they also do covers.
So which artistes get their pick when it comes to covers? Coldplay, U2, Porcupine Tree, pat comes the reply.
While Plok clearly does not wish to follow a defined genre, we can detect a strain here. Breaking our bubble, Plok tells us, that they have influences that can be detected in their compositions, they are open to any form of sound, as it suits the piece. So while In a Sense has a very pop feel to it, a track like Momentary Lapse sounds very close to heavy metal. Alternative rock, that is how Plok wants to define their genre.
This very young band has their future decently charted out, but they are taking developments as they come. Focussing on original compositions and publicity via social networking sites, Plok is gearing up hard for this year.
The band is made up of people who are working and school passouts. Plok needs to work that much harder to get their act in form. Juggling work and music is not easy! So while the professionals in the group, Anirudh and Neeraj, have not decided whether they want to quit their office avatars and focus on the rockstar ones, the idea is not off the board. Depending on what shapes up, perhaps Plok could get more serious.
Kickstarting 2013 with a performance in Hard Rock Cafe on 3 January, Plok has an album in the pipeline that is in the last stages of production.
