A Dire Straits number played out as a caller tune before a cheerful voice broke in. It was Dhawal Mudgal, the vocalist of Half Step Down, all pepped up before their gig in Delhi.

Half Step Down began its musical expedition in 2005. It kicked off with blues/rock in 2006 developing into a versatile band whose music isn’t confined to any genre. They derive their sound from influences and inspirations ranging from Led Zeppelin, RHCP, and Dave Matthews to Rachmaninoff, Marley, and ‘anybody who slogs in hours in music’, say Dhawal. They were out with their first album Overture to outerspace in 2007. It was their key to much larger platforms: Channel V Launchpad being one.

There are peculiarly known for their hedonistic antics on stage. Dhawal confirms the claims, ‘The audience needs to be involved in the experience. Our energy on stage transfers to them’. Coming from a classical music background, Dhawal found his space in rock music. Does his mother, Shubha Mudgal, has any qualms about it, we asked. ‘They are happy; as far as I am connected to music in someway. It was my choice to pick up what I liked’, he explains, adding that though their schedules don’t allow them to attend each others’ performance, his mother did come for the launch of his first album. Half Step Down is a step away from releasing its second album Notes from Antidote by the fall of 2013. For all of you, attending its performance in Delhi, they are going to play a few tracks from the upcoming album.

Half step down is playing at Hard Rock Café on 11 April.  Take your pick and get moving.
