The videos had gone viral and fuelled mass protests across the nation in which the accused persons were seen laughing, while committing the dreaded crime. Upset with the disturbing footage, the Supreme Court on February 27 expressed its shock and ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.
CBI) spokesperson said: “We have arrested one person, identified as Subrata Sahu, from Bhubaneswar and he was in connection with the gang-rape video case. He is a real estate agent and was picked up on Monday night by our officers.” On Tuesday, he was produced before a local court in Odisha and will be brought to New Delhi on a transit remand. He was booked under Section 292 read with Section 34, Sections 294, 354 C and 66E, 67, 67A of IT Act. “It seems people believe they can commit rape with impunity and imagine now they are being uploaded too. Look at the audacity. The fact of the matter is that it is a serious issue and something needs to be done. Have any of the culprits been booked,” a bench headed by Justice Madan B. Lokur had earlier said.
The court said that from the videos, the men appeared to be from north India, likely from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar or Odisha. Issuing notices to the three states, the court has directed them to hunt for the rapists in the video. The Union Home and IT Ministries have also been served notice on the videos. The matter came in lime light before the court after social activist Sunitha Krishnan had uploaded the videos on Youtube. She also started #ShameTheRapist Campaign. The edited videos had blurred the faces of the women.
SC seeks reply from defence lawyers
The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought response from two advocates, representing the December 16 gang-rape convicts, against whom a women lawyers body has sought action for allegedly making derogatory remarks against women in a BBC documentary on the case. “We have heard the argument, pleadings and grievances urged in the petition. The matter requires consideration in view of the factual and legal submissions,” a bench comprising justices V Gopala Gowda and C Nagappan said. The bench issued notices to the two advocates, M L Sharma and A P Singh, and sought their response in two weeks.
