The incident was reported to the fire department at about 3.15 pm and immediately 20 fire tenders were dispatched to the spot to douse the blaze. The fire broke out in Bhagwan Das Kothi at Pratap Gali near Hauman Mandir in the Gandhi Nagar market. The market is considered to be the largest cloth market in Asia and it houses a number of textile units and factories.

“The fire broke out from a kerosene shop in the market, which later spread across the market area. An electric pole near the kerosene shop suddenly sparked to fire and took to the gallons of stored kerosene, resulting in a major fire,” a senior police official told Millennium Post. However, probe is on to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.

The fire tenders could not reach the spot on time due to heavy traffic. According to the fire official, “Initially only 16 fire tenders were sent to the spot but the area was so congested that the tenders could not reach the spot on time. Four more fire tenders had to be sent to douse the flames.”

According to another official in fire department, it took around two hours and 20 minutes to bring the flames under control. Few persons were also rescued, of whom, two people received burn injuries. One of them was immediately sent to the nearby Guru Teg Bahadur hospital, while the other is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung hospital. “The duo received 40 per cent burn injuries,” a police official said. However, their identities have not been disclosed.
