Moving a step forward towards implementing its pre-poll promise of providing free wi-fi connectivity across the city, the AAP-led-Delhi government on Thursday started a three-day public consultation with the Information Technology department in association with the Delhi Dialogue Commission.
The deliberations of the inaugural session were attended by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, vice-chairman, DDC, Ashish Khetan, Parliamentary secretary in the IT Department, Adarsh Shastri and Chief Secretary of Delhi, KK Sharma. Addressing the gathering, Khetan said that the DDC is committed towards implementing the government’s promise of providing free wi-fi access and right to internet to every citizen in Delhi. He said that universal access to internet is a transformative idea that can empower citizens and provide them a level playing field, irrespective of economic status, educational qualifications, gender, race or religion.
Delhi government has already sought suggestions of interested persons, organisations, stake-holders to send in their suggestions on business models, technologies, implementation strategies and any other aspects on email to delhiwidewifi@gmail.com within March 23.
“Delhi has a unique opportunity to become the first city in India to have Universal Internet Access over high speed wi-fi, so that all citizens of Delhi, especially those who are socially or economically disadvantaged can get access to knowledge, information, services and finally an opportunity for socio-economic development.
It can be argued that the next greatest enabler of opportunities for the poorest of poor would come from the access to information highway and internet. This will democratise opportunities and will empower the common man,” Khetan said.
