Four months on, no sewage master plan for Capital yet

Four months after the committee was formed to draft water and sewer master plan for Delhi, the advisory group, chaired by water expert Babubhai Navalawala, has not come up with any layout to resolve the issues.

The advisory group comprising senior officers from the Delhi Jal Board, Department of Environment and Forests, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, WAPCOS (India), a central government’s undertaking, TERI University and other eminent experts. The members of the group have met twice in the  last four months. Sources have also informed that there were clear differences of opinions amongst the group members. The only general consensus was that the organisations should take ‘time-bound measures’ for conservation of ground water.

In a meeting on 29 September, Navalawala reiterated the use of treated effluent for non-potable purposes to reclaim the declining ground water levels in Delhi. He suggested that a sustained public outreach programme should be carried out to create awareness about conservation of water and implementation of rain water harvesting systems.

WAPCOS (India) stated that they will conduct a pre-feasibility study on behalf of DJB, regarding the storage of surplus monsoon flood water of the river Yamuna.

The Irrigation and Flood Control Department also discussed measures taken by them. It’s officials also gave a presentation on future plans on revival of water bodies in the city and construction of check dams for the purpose of ground water recharge.
