Former national boxing champion arrested for helping under-trial escape

From a national-level boxing champ in Haryana to one of the ten men who took away Jitender Ghogi from police custody, 20-year-old Deepak Pahal was arrested by the Delhi Police Crime Branch on Tuesday.

A former national level boxer, Deepak, along with his associates took away dreaded criminal Jitender Ghogi from police custody in the Bahadurgarh area on Sunday morning while he was being taken to court at Jind, Haryana from Tihar Jail.

According to the police, the incident took place at around 6.15 am when four officers of the 3rd Battalion tasked with ferrying Ghogi were allegedly intercepted by a group of ten associates of Ghogi who came in two cars. 

They allegedly intercepted the Haryana Roadways bus in such a way that the bus was surrounded by the two cars. Few of them then entered the bus and went at the back of the bus where Ghogi was seated. They allegedly threw chilli powder at the cops and took away an MP-5 gun of one of the officers.

During investigation, on Tuesday, at around 8 am, police received a specific information that one of the members of the Ghogi gang who played a crucial role in his escape will come to Gandhi Nagar, Sonepat in Haryana. 

Based on this, teams were formed, a trap was laid and Deepak Pahal was apprehended. During interrogation, he disclosed that he is a national-level boxer and was a junior light weight boxing national champion of 2011. He also participated in various international boxing competitions since 2011. 

It was during those days when he got into a scuffle with a fellow boxer at the Boxing Federation Hostel in Rai, Haryana and broke his teeth. A police case was registered and consequently, he was blacklisted from boxing. He further revealed that he befriended one Mohit. Mohit along with others hatched a plan to take away Jitender Ghogi.

Senior officers of the Crime Branch said that one of the two cars in which Jitender Ghogi was seated after being taken away from police custody last headed to somewhere in UP, as per Deepak’s version.

Police said that Deepak also claimed that they had robbed one of the two cars from Bawana area a night before the incident. Further investigation is still on.
