The accused was identified as Rakesh Kumar, alias Bijliwala, who lives near Mohan Garden in West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area. He also allegedly extorted money from traders in the weekly market in the area as ‘protection money’, for uninterrupted supply of electricity at the weekly market in an illegal manner. The 21-year-old man, identified as Mohit, reportedly owed protection money to Rakesh. On March 6, Rakesh met him near the market and asked for the money. When he refused to pay the money immediately, Rakesh — who was in an inebriated state — got involved in a heated argument with the victim after which Rakesh stabbed Mohit.

“Rakesh had worked with a contractor of BSES for three years for supplying electricity at the weekly markets. During this period, Rakesh collected protection money from unauthorised weekly market vendors and battery operated lamp suppliers in lieu of providing them unauthorised electricity supply. He collected about Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 from each person. The contractor removed him three months ago, but he and his associates still collected protection money from the markets,” said Ravindra Singh, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).
