Former director of HAL convicted of bribery

A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Judge convicted Avatar Krishan Zutshi of offering bribe to an officer of the probe agency for suppressing his disproportionate assets case in 2004. The court has sentenced Zutshi to four years’ rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 against him. Zutshi’s mediator NP Manikandan, the then General Manager of M/s PCS Industries Ltd in Bengaluru, has also been convicted.

The CBI had registered a case based on a complaint filed by a Junior Technical Officer, CBI, Chennai, in February 2004. The complainant alleged that Manikandan had offered him bribe for giving a favourable report on Zutshi.

“We caught Manikandan red-handed giving Rs 50,000 and a cellphone to the complainant. A chargesheet was filed before a Special Judge for CBI cases, Chennai, against the accused persons under Section 120-B of IPC r/w Section 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and substantive offences under section 12 PC Act r/w 34 IPC,” said CBI spokesperson.

Meanwhile, in another case, the CBI has registered a case against a Director of an Ahmedabad-based private telecom company and directors of other private firms on the basis of a joint complaint received from the State Bank of India, Vijaya Bank and Canara Bank.
